Basic Tools & Equipment

ELECTRIC HAND DRILL

The electric hand drill is one of the most useful basic tools.

Here are a few tips on use.
  • To keep the drill from moving around when starting a hole, just mark the spot with a pencil and then use a nail or punch to make a small dent on the mark. Now the drill will not wobble around.
  • To be sure your drill is drilling at a 90 degree angle to the surface, attach a small plastic bubble type level to the top of the electric drill.
  • To prevent a hole from going too deep just attach a piece of tape to the drill bit at the proper height to indicate when you have reached that point.

SCREWDRIVERS

Having the correct screwdriver makes the job much easier. A basic set of screwdrivers will have four standard slot-tip and four Phillips cross-tip in different lenghts and blade sizes.

  • When buying screwdrivers get only the best. Don't go for the bargain type which are very likely to have blades that are softer then the screws you are using.

  • To get a screw started in a difficult place just push the screw through a piece of tape sticky side up and press the loose ends of the tape to the screwdriver blade. The screw will now stick to the screwdriver.

HAMMERS

Hammers come in different head weights and handle lenghts.
Handles are made from wood like hickory or ash and metal such as tublar steel with a nice grip. Check to see if the head has been forged and not molded and has nice clean edges. The basic hammer is the 16 ounce claw type and is used on most projects around the house.

SAWS

You will need two types of saws for most household projects. A general purpose wood saw and a hacksaw for cutting metal and pipes.

ROUTERS

A 1.5 horsepower router is probably the best for all around use. Check for ones that allow you to turn it on and off while both hands are holding the router.
