House & Cabin Fix Ups

Wall Repairs

When you have a small hole in wallboard (drywall) use this neat trick.
  • Use your fabric iron to apply an iron-on polymer fabric wallboard patch. Paint it to match and then sand the edges to blend them in. Now a second coat of paint and it's fixed.
  • For minor wall repairs before painting just use a pacthing compound known as " spackle" It won't shrink like joint compound it's easy to spread and dries fast so you can get right to painting.

Installing Wallboard

Always install wallboard across and not up and down.
  • Use sheets that are 10 or 12 feet long as long sheets will reduce the number of seems and make it easier to tape.
  • Start at the top of the wall and put a nail in the studs underneath the wallboard for it to sit on while you nail or screw it into place.
  • To mark the site of an electrical outlet, insert the screws into the holes for mounting the receptacle and leave them sticking out a bit. Now press the wallboard up againts the site and the screws will leave a mark. Next using the box cover, line up the holes with the marks, draw a line around the cover plate and cut the drywall just inside of that line.
